Baby Carriers for Dad
Moms love babywearing, but keeping baby close in a sling or carrier can be a great tool for Dad, too! Being able to wear their little one not only helps Dads bond with the baby, it also makes them more confident in their parenting, as baby settles down happily in the sling. As baby gets older, Dad can take him along for some of his favorite activities. And we can't forget: if Dad can carry the baby for a little while, Mom gets a much-needed break!
Some general recommendations are below, as well as links to our favorite products for Dad. Also, be sure to read "A Dad's Addiction to Babywearing" for a first-hand perspective from a babywearing Dad.
Pack-style Carriers
A popular pick for babywearing Dads is a backpack-inspired carrier, such as the Ergo (shown in the picture) or the Beco Baby Carrier. These carriers have well-padded shoulders, and sturdy hip belts to distribute the weight of even the heaviest of babies. Babies can be worn on the front from birth (though an extra infant insert is required for newborns). Once the baby has good head control, they can go on the wearer's back. The sturdy construction, and familiar buckles and clips make these a great choice for Dad, but their adjustability means that both parents can easily use them.
Mei Tais
A lot of Dads also like the ease and convenience of mei tai carriers. These asian-inspired carriers distribute the weight across both shoulders, but don't have the waist belt of the pack carriers. They are a bit more lightweight and compact than the pack carriers, and many people prefer them for smaller babies. They are particularly nice for back carries with smaller babies, because you can easily get the baby high enough on your back that they can see over your shoulder (rather than sitting at waist level, as they do in pack carriers). Most of the mei tai carriers that we sell have a print on one side, but reverse to a solid color on the other, and can be worn either way. They are also one size, so they can be shared by both parents.
Pouches
If you're looking for something quick, easy, and straightforward that Dad will love, a pouch is just the ticket. For Hotslings, use the size calculator to figure out the right size for dad (just use his chest circumfrence, rather than his bra size :-D in the calculator.) If you're not sure of the right size, the adjustable Mammas Milk pouches are a great option. These carriers are quick and easy to put on, and can be used in the cradle or upright position with newborns, or on the hip with older babies. They come in a wide variety of colors and prints, so there's sure to be one to suit every taste.
